ASUS laptops are one of the leaders on today's market (good value for money). Well, since they are in demand, there are always enough questions about them...

In today's article I want to touch on one of them - namely, entering the BIOS (or UEFI on newer device modifications). Most often, this needs to be done to boot from an installation flash drive (for example, to update/install Windows OS), to disconnect some devices, view the model of components, etc.

Note : The article is replete with explanatory screenshots. Some details that you see on the screenshots may differ slightly from yours, depending on the software version of your device (but all steps will be the same for laptops of this brand).

Method 1

  1. First, turn off the laptop;
  2. Then hold down the F2 button;
  3. Without releasing the F2 button, turn on the device;
  4. Do not release the F2 button until the main BIOS/UEFI page appears.

Note: instead of holding down the F2 key, you can press it often immediately after turning on the laptop. The action will be similar, you should also see the main BIOS settings page.

As for choosing the media to boot, you need to open the "BOOT" section. Below I will consider the 2 most popular software options.

Newer ASUS laptops use UEFI instead of BIOS: there are several links at the bottom of the screen - click on "Advanced Mode (F7)" (you can also press F8 to select the media, the boot menu will open, where you can select all available drives to boot).

In the "BOOT" subsection in the "Boot Option #1" line you can select and specify the media from which you want to boot. After changing the settings, do not forget to save them (F10 key or select "Save and Exit" from the menu (i.e. save settings and exit)).

In older laptops, you will find the usual BIOS: here you can immediately open the BOOT section and specify the required drive (flash drive) in the “Boot Option #1” line. Saving settings can also be done using the F10 key.

Method 2

This method is somewhat different from the first: the fact is that we will not open the BIOS itself, but the boot menu: from it you can quickly select the flash drive or disk from which you want to boot (very convenient, and there is no need to change any BIOS settings).

I note that the boot menu also contains a link to enter the BIOS. So, if you have a problem with the F2 key, try using ESC!

  1. First of all, we also turn off the laptop;
  2. Then hold down the ESC key;
  3. Without releasing ESC, turn on the laptop;
  4. We hold the ESC key until the boot menu appears in front of us.

The boot menu is a simple list of devices (disks, flash drives, etc.) from which you can boot.

In my example below, there are 3 lines:

  1. Enter Setup - enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.

Method 3: For Windows 10 users

If the previous methods did not work for you (for example, this may happen if there are problems with the keyboard), then you can resort to others. Below are a couple of options for those who use the modern Windows 10 OS.

Option 1

  1. Open the START/Settings menu;
  2. Then the "Update and Security" section;
  3. This section should have a "Recovery" tab;
  4. Look for the heading "Special boot options" and click the "Restart" button.

After rebooting the device, a blue screen with special boot options will automatically pop up. Select an option , and then . See screenshots below.

Option 2

  1. Press a combination of buttons WIN+R;
  2. In a pop-up window "Run" enter the command powercfg.cpl ;
  3. The "Power Options" settings window should open: in the menu on the left, select the "Power button actions" option.

Change settings that are currently unavailable

Now the shutdown options should become active: you need to uncheck the “Enable fast startup” checkbox. Then save the settings and restart your laptop.

BIOS provides the user with extensive capabilities that are not available in the operating system. In any case, the changes made to it will be reliably protected. What you can do in the BIOS is a separate topic. Nowadays it is most often used to configure booting from a flash drive when restoring or installing a new Windows.

Such a need may arise when you buy an Asus Zenbook. And it already has the Ubuntu OS, which is unusual for you, installed.

An original approach to accessing the BIOS

Let everyone have their own interest in, and our main task for today is to enter the system of these basic settings, which is what it is. In Asus laptops this is done in a somewhat unusual way. If you have Asus Transfomer, don't forget to connect the keyboard.

  • To get into the BIOS, you need to turn on the PC while pressing the “F2” key. This method is good because you don’t have to wait for the moment to quickly reboot the system;

  • If you have Windows 10, you can also select the “Restart” action while holding down the “Shift” key

In addition, there are other options (which you can also find on laptops from other manufacturers):

  • After turning on the PC and the Asus logo appears, we begin to quickly and rhythmically press the “F2” or “Delete” button. The combination “Fn+F2” or other function buttons is also possible. In the same situation we use “Esc”. This will display the boot menu, where we need to select “Enter Setup”.

Leaving UEFI

In modern laptop models, when performing the above steps, you may not find the usual AMI BIOS. Instead, you will see classic UEFI. This means that Secure Boot mode is enabled on your laptop.

In principle, UEFI allows you to solve most problems of changing basic system settings. But if you need to get into the “normal” BIOS, I’ll now tell you how to disable Secure Boot using the Asus VivoBook as an example:

  • F7 (Advanced menu) → “Boot” section;
  • in the “Secure Boot” subsection, switch “Secure Boot” to the “Other OS” state;
  • in the subsection “CSM (Compatibility Support Module)” → “Launch CSM” to the “Enabled” position. Here:
  • “Boot Device Control” → switch to “Legacy OpROM only” (or “UEFI and Legacy OpROM”);
  • “Boot from Storage Devices” → switch to “Legacy OpROM first” (or “Both, Legacy OpROM first”);

Press “F10” and save. Reboot the PC and enter the BIOS.

Types of BIOS

Before entering the BIOS on an Asus laptop (or any other laptop), you should know that depending on the functionality and settings of the motherboard, the BIOS may differ on different devices. In this case, the basic BIOS settings are always identical. Based on the menu structure, there are two main types of BIOS:

  • Award BIOS;
  • Ami BIOS.

Login to BIOS

The BIOS is entered immediately when the computer or laptop starts booting, starting from the moment the device is turned on. To do this you need:

  • Turn on the computer;
  • When the device starts booting, a prompt will appear on the screen which key to press (“Press DEL to enter SETUP” or “Press F1 to RUN setup”);
  • Press a specific key or combination of keys on the keyboard (may vary on models from different manufacturers).

Key options

Modern computers and laptops load quite quickly, so it's easy to miss the on-screen prompt. How to enter BIOS on an asus laptop

It’s worth noting right away that the presented method may not work if you are a Windows 10 or 8 user. Then I’ll even tell you why exactly and how it can be fixed.

We do the following: turn off your laptop, click and hold the F2 button, and then turn on the gadget again.

When the BIOS is open, you can release the button.

Boot steps can be changed using the Boot tab. To do this, you just need to replace the first device with a CD, DVD drive or flash drive, which should already be connected. In my case, the first place belongs to the SSD drive.

Don’t forget to save the settings by clicking on the F10 key. After Windows is installed or certain actions are performed, it is better to again assign the hard drive or SSD the first place in the list of devices.

We go into the BIOS with Windows 10 and 8

The bottom line is that the quick boot function makes it impossible to enter the BIOS after the laptop has been turned off. Verified. I turned off my laptop, pressed F2, turned it on again, and Windows 10 booted.

In this regard, for the F2 button to work, you should not turn it off, but only restart the laptop. To do this, in the “Start” menu, click on the shutdown icon and then select the “Restart” option.

Then you should press and hold, or simply actively click on the F2 key.

Another method is to temporarily disable the Quick Start function.

  1. You need to go to the Control Panel, then select “All Items”, then “Power Options”, and finally select the item called “Power Key Actions”.
  2. You should uncheck the item called “Enable quick launch”, and then save the settings.
  3. If the above item is already inactive, the link “Adjusting parameters that are currently unavailable” will be located above. Click on it.

Then you can turn off your laptop, turn it on again and go to the BIOS, as was shown at the very beginning of the publication. When everything is done, I recommend activating the “Quick Start” function again.

I hope that, thanks to my advice, you now know how to enter the BIOS on an ASUS laptop. Everything works for me without any problems. Just be extremely careful and not change absolutely all settings indiscriminately. You can configure it so that you will have to change your laptop afterwards.

By the way, if something suddenly doesn’t go as planned, you always have the opportunity to return the BIOS settings to factory settings by clicking on the F9 key.

  3. Press the "Power" button (do not release "F2" at the same time).
  4. In the BIOS, on the "Boot" tab, change the boot order of devices (if necessary).

Note: To properly initialize a device in the BIOS, it must be connected to the computer before turning it on. This applies to hard drives and bootable flash drives.

Or use this method to enter BIOS:

  1. Turn off your computer again. Hold down the "Power" button for 5-10 seconds.
  2. Press and hold the "ESC" key.
  3. Press the "Power" key (do not release "ESC" while doing this).
  4. In the boot menu that opens, select "Enter Setup".
  5. Set up the BIOS and save the changes using the "F10" key.

Note: If you only need access to the BIOS to change the boot order of connected devices, use a more convenient method:

  1. Turn off the computer by long pressing the "Power" button.
  2. Insert a bootable USB flash drive or disk into your laptop.
  3. Hold down and do not release the "ESC" key.
  4. Press the "Power" button once.
  5. In the Boot menu that opens, select the desired device.

On ASUS laptops with Windows 8 and higher

Almost all new laptops are released with UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) instead of BIOS. Like the BIOS, UEFI is the interface between the operating system and the hardware. One of the advantages of this interface is the fast loading of the laptop due to the parallel loading of individual system components.

New ASUS computers come with Windows 8 and 10 operating systems, which support Fast Boot mode. Combined with UEFI, this ensures the laptop starts up quickly. Therefore, on such devices there is no initialization start window, and you will not be able to enter the BIOS or UEFI in the standard way.

On new Windows 8 computers, there are two ways to get into the BIOS. Let's look at the first one:

  1. Go to your Windows desktop.
  2. Swipe your mouse or finger (touch screen) along the right edge of the desktop.
  3. In the menu that opens, select "Change computer settings."
  4. In the General section, click Special boot options.
  5. Click the "Reboot Now" button.
  6. In the menu that opens, select "Diagnostics".
  7. Next "Advanced options".
  8. Then "Embedded UEFI Settings".
  9. If necessary, connect a bootable USB flash drive.
  10. Click the "Restart" button.
  11. Configure what you need in the BIOS and save the changes using the "F10" button.

There is an easier way to get into UEFi in Windows 8 and above:

  1. Press and hold the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  2. Click the Restart button in Windows while continuing to hold Shift.
  3. Before starting the computer, immediately press and hold the "F2" key.
  4. Make the necessary settings in the BIOS or UEFI.

Disabling laptop fast startup

Despite the fact that quick startup is a very convenient feature, sometimes it becomes necessary to disable it. To deactivate laptop fast startup:

  1. Go to "Control Panel".
  2. Select All Control Panel Items.
  3. Open "Power Options".
  4. Select what the power buttons do.
  5. Click "Change settings that are not currently available." To do this, you must log in as an administrator.
  6. Under the "Shutdown Options" heading, uncheck the "Enable Fast Startup (Recommended)" checkbox.
  7. If necessary, disable the Hibernation feature.
